John Sykes 1987 Still Of The Night tone chasing with a Mesa Boogie Mark Coliseum!
Compare against the OG!
ua-cam.com/video/7PGpUSdgmlc/v-deo.htmlsi=v-pef6psCC7UufV5&t=58
One of my favorite guitar tones of all time is John Sykes' work on Whitesnake 1987 where he recorded with a pair of Mesa Boogie Mark III Coliseum heads in stereo with a slight delay. I thought it would be fun to see how close I could dial in my setup to that sound with my Mark IIC++ Coliseum! Of course he was using a LP Custom with Dirty Fingers and (I'm not sure what speakers), where I'm using an EMG81 and Vintage 30s, but I still enjoy the process of seeing if I can set mine up to sound as good... or better? So, here's my go and at the link above is the isolated guitar track from the album for comparison. What do you think?

How close are the Mesa Boogie Mark IIB vs IIC+ vs III vs IV?
Переглядів 772Місяць тому
In the Mix 0:00 Guitar Only 0:42 I spent a little time (haha) reamping these vintage Marks trying to see how close I could get them on the mic. In hindsight I'm pretty happy with these tones, although the MkIII green stripe could have used a touch more gain. How do they sound to you?
Griffin Analog Chiron vs Schaffer boost pedals with a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier
Переглядів 1182 місяці тому
In the Mix - 0:00 Guitars Only - 0:42 Today I have the pleasure of comparing two of my favorite boost pedals on my Triple Recto- a pair from Griffin Analog. We have the Chiron which is a Klone, and the Schaffer which is based off the Schaffer Vega wireless system circuit. What do you hear between them? Triple Rec G modded to C spec, 2002 Recto Traditional V30 cab, E609 & SM7B blended. The riff ...

In the Mix 0:00 Guitars Only 1:03 Hey friends! A buddy of mine picked up a SLO 30, and I've been wanting to try one of these out for a long time now so I was stoked to get a chance to jam on it & do some reamping! I have read that the 30 is tighter than the 100 (which I had a while ago) and they're right. All the tone of the 100 in a more volume-manageable package. Anyway check it out against a...

In The Mix 0:01 Guitar Only 1:03 So I recently picked up a Marshall 2551AV cab loaded with a quad of 2015 Marshall Vintage 16 ohm speakers. So, I wanted to do some reamping to put them up on the E609 against my trusty 2002 V30 8 ohm loaded Mesa traditional recto straight cab. Here's a reamp mash up using a riff from one of my band's songs called "Release". I went ahead & used tones from my Mark...

XL Cloudbreak Thundercloud Fiji March 7 '24 & Tavarua Ni Sa Bula song

I was fortunate enough to be staying on Tavarua last week when a BIG swell rolled through Thursday. I took a break from riding to spectate (because death) and wanted to share a bunch of raw clips I shot from the channel of giant Cloudbreak! The sets were breaking solid on the second reef, which is WAY outside of the first reef that usually gets surfed, and even some cappers hit the third reef. ...
Mesa Boogie Mark IVb vs Peavey 6505+
Переглядів 6895 місяців тому
In the Mix 0:01 Guitars Only 1:02 Hey friends, today I wanted to see how my live band settings for my Mark IVb stacked up with an older USA made Peavey 6505 . The riff is from my band's song Release, reamped and level matched through my 2002 Recto Traditional 4x12 and micd with an E609. There's a noise gate in front and it's straight in otherwise. What do you think in the mix vs guitars only?

Here's the first live go for a brand new song called Everpresent Enemy, check it out! The rig this night was my ESP Hanny and a Fender Bassman 100T with a Friedman BE-OD in the front going into a 2001 V30 loaded Traditional straight Recto 4x12. What do you think about the tone??

In the Mix - 0:00 Guitars Only - 1:29 NAD!! I picked up a new Peavey 6505 1992 Original to try out, it arrived and 3 hours later I gigged it. :haha: Went great! I read about how the new 6505s are wired to accept EL34s so long as the bias is in range (since the amp has no bias adjustment also like the original 5150) so I figured I'd see how they sounded along side the stock 6L6GCs. The tune is a...

Mesa Boogie Mark VII vs. an original Mark IIC !
Jwp for the win
To my ears, here at least, the Mark VII (IV) sounds more like the IIC++ (though not as good) than it does the Mark IV.
Wow, bro how did you get this tone on DC-3? I have a '95 DC-3 combo with Vintage Black Shadow speaker, and tone of my amp absolutely not like that. What settings you using?
It's not about the settings, you have to use a sealed cab. Combos do not metal. Here I'm using a traditional 4x12 w/ G12T-75s.
Ive heard you say the ++ mod sounds cooler on the Simuls? Do you still think that?
Splitting hairs, but yeah.
Great comparison! I love them all, my IIb most of all 😉🎸⚡️🎶
1. MLT 2. Mark III 3. Recto
The red stripe actually has a decent R2 crunch
MkIII R2 boosted is a killer rhythm tone.
Where did you get rhe 2021 speakers from? Out of a cab or did you just buy the speaker?
Purchased from Mesa.
Tremoverb… has ALL THE BAWLS 👏🏽
Pretty much my amp ('85 No-Stripe III+ with a few additional Mike B. mods, wood & wicker) with a substantial increase in output power. Oh, the humanity :)
Must be something odd with my sounds, I can hardly hade the presence on 1 while riffing. I just find it to sound like bees on top of my tone.
love it Jeremy. i think so much of the sykes magic on that album and the first blue murder is in the mic set up.
Here, I prefer "all amp" and didn't like either of the boost pedal tones. (I currently own a very early No-Stripe, with the Mike B. "+" mod & etc.) One of the reasons I've always owned Mesa amps and preamps - albeit not a Recto - is the fact that I don't ever have to use a boost pedal, the use of which always seemed to me to be the sonic equivalent of adding Coffee-Mate to a premium cup of coffee. BTW, thanks for all the great Mesa/Boogie content.
Tune it or intonate
Nice! \m/

Sounds great!!
The sound from Rev C sounds killer. Would it be possible to re-amp this beast via the Neural Amp Modeller (NAM) on red and orange?
Sorry, that's not possible. I sold the amp and I don't do modelers.
It's pretty much dead on
Nice !!!!
Great tone bro !
I have 5 of mark series amps, Green stripe, Red stripe, Blue Stripe and a a IIC+.. if they were vastly different they wouldn't have just swiped each version with just a magic marker swipe or a black dot or a + sign. The big difference in the IIC+ and the Mark III was the third channel. Mesa got noticeably different with the Mesa badging vs the Boogie badges. The Rectifier series,The lone star, Road King,Nomad, etc came later and did sound different... The stiletto was probably the most different being EL34 based shooting toward the Marshall tone. Even my newer Mark 5 EL84 based amp sits in my studio with the older mark III'S and IIC+ it too sounds really close even all these years later with totally different power section/ tubes. The petrucci amp is a modern Mark amp and you can line up all the Mark series amps and NO one in the audience would ever know the difference and most guitar players blind folded couldn't pick them out one from the other especially with the transparent EVM 12L black shadow speaker or an MC-90 black shadow. The IIC+ landed production in the right time to become the flagship vintage boogie. Thats when 80's music was huge and that amp was produced at the right time for the players who made it famous. it didn't make them famous. I would argue a Mark III purple, red, blue or green stripe Mark III could have been used by the players who made the IIC+ famous and those albums and concerts wouldn't have sounded any different. They just weren't available at the time those bands recorded those albums. They stopped the IIC+ when the mark III came into production. They stopped the III when the Mark IV started and so on....they are all great amps and tonally are the same. Most of those bands stopped playing the IIC+ and went to the mark III when it came out because the sound was basically the same but the 3 had a third channel, everyone loved that.

I love the vintage channel on my MW DR, it's a really an awesome amp all together.
You know something, I own some pretty rad amps, Mesa, EVH, ENGL. I played a few them back to back the other day and I thought to myself “I really don’t need all these amps”. They’re all going for the same sound in different ways. They all have their own character but in a recording setting you can most likely make them all sound the same. Mesas Marks are probably the most unique, they have a very nice palm mute and clarity.
If you aren't running a 1/3 octave (31 band) graphic EQ in your Mark II or III's effects loop and tweaking every slider in the effective audible frequency range, you are NOT getting all the tone out of your Mark that you possibly could. Do it. You'll be shocked at the results you can achieve.
does the kahler feel closer to a hard tail than a floyd rose ?
I would say no.
original tone smokes! send it back.
The compact 2x12 was my first mesa cab. Wow. Hated it.
I MISTAKENLY ORDERD A 1X12 "MINI" AS OPPOSED TO THE TRADITIONAL....45 MINUTES LATER IT WAS LITERALLY PACKED BACK UP IN THE BOX IT CAME IN
IIB+ is my preference
II A is also good and more rare!
Awesome video! What do you like about going in March? Any pros and cons? I'd like to make my first trip next year and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
From what I understand March is the shoulder season and the weather can be iffy. We've had 2 great weather trips & 1 rainy trip for example. That said, every trip there has been days of really solid surf FTW. I can't say about any other months since we always go in March, that said we're happy with where we're at.
@@TIGHTENmetal Thank you so much for the information!
@@TIGHTENmetal Thank you so much for the information!!
That was great, Thanks!
They are all insane guitars and sound amazing but the KH is way more balanced and has this low end sound. I think that it'll cut a mix way better. The JL and JH share too much treble for my taste but it could be fixed / adjusted with EQ.

I actually prefer the IV here.
do you know if the MC90's in it have the 1777 cone ?
Sorry, I have no idea & it's long gone.
@@TIGHTENmetal i got the answer from several owner, 1777 cone it is
I think the III sounds the worst of the four amps and I think it is a pretty wide gap to my ears. I like the 2c++ and the IVb the best. I cant tell which I prefer. I was leaning towards the IV at the beginning of the video but as it went on, I warmed up to the 2C++. I am a 5150iii guy so I guess I like the IV because it sounds the closest to my preferred amp.
The IV is definitely going to be closer to what a 5150 does with those mids.
I have been contemplating getting a Mark IV or getting another EVH 515 50W 6L6. The EVH would be much more versatile
Mark IV for the win!
"To Me", IVb sounds closest to IIC+. Thank You dfor this. Had never heard a comparison like this before. Very informative 🤗. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
well not in a mix duh wtf.
The b and c sound most similar. The c is more aggressive sounding while the b is smoother. I liked the b most surprisingly
They all sound good. I recently got my hands on a 1985 mark iii no stripe. Very early serial # 15262. I'm loving this amp. Once you dial it in, the amp can do anything. Rock on !!!
Would like to hear it compared to IV-A which is one I have
III green = IVa
I have compared a friend's IIC+ to my Mark IV rev A and they are ridiculously close. In a mix there is no difference.
man ............ I love them all !!!
They are a *little* different in this video. They each have a slightly different midrange. The IIB+ is a little "deeper" sounding. The IIC++ is sharper and more aggressive. The III Green Stripe is a little smoother and darker. The IVb is very close to the IIC++ maybe even slightly sharper sounding with a tiny bit more "scoop," but it's very close. Overall I'm surprised how close they all are. If you're looking for a IIC+ just buy a Mark IVb for a third of the price. Cool video!
rite on brother!!! scored my 2008 mark IV at the start of covid for bout $1400.00 n its in near mint condition...was super stoked n still am...cheers brother!!!
With both in sounds nice, well done comparison vid
These amps should be demoed in a different way, 99% of people dial them in heavy and chugging....they are so much more than just that sound, i can get Neal schon from journeys tone, Mathias jabs from the scorpions, Eric Johnson's tone, pretty close, very smooth melodic soulful sounds, it's a shame no one plays them that way. Listen to Petrucci live in the 90's, he played them that way and they are wonderful.
Sounds like an opportunity for you to create your own videos showcasing this aspect of the amps!
